This Place is Not Our Home

(This is an old stone house near Springfield, MO. It isn’t the one we’re buying.)

Where are our hearts?

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21

We are all looking forward to being in a home of our own again. A home where we can paint, remodel, plant a garden, get settled in and just live life  without fear of scratching the walls. In all this, however, I am reminded that this earth is not our permanent home. The physical comforts we enjoy are only temporary. There won’t be a need for the sun in the New Jerusalem, because the glory of God will give it light, and its lamp will be the Lamb (Rev. 21:23). Many other things that we take for granted now we will not need someday. We cannot take our “stuff” with us; souls are eternal, not things. Are we really investing in what is important, or are we so distracted by the things of this world that we neglect to leave a foundation that will last?

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world – the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life – is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” – 1st John 2:15-17

I know that it is easy for me to forget to set my mind on things of the spirit rather than on things of the flesh. We each need to be constantly encouraging each other to strive to live in holiness and godliness, as we wait for the Kingdom of Jesus Christ to come.

“Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.” – 2 Peter 3:11-13

This pond is on the property we are buying. It is stocked with fish.
